Save Money for the Holiday Season

Preparing a budget for the holiday season is very hard. Halloween requires at minimum costumes and candy, and by the time the rest of the holiday season rolls around you have to prepare a budget for food, presents, and more food.  Here are a few tips to help you save money during the holiday season.

DIY Halloween Costumes- Do-It-Yourself Halloween costumes are a perfect opportunity to save a few dollars. Instead of heading out to the store, look through the closets in your apartment for the “not so stylish” outfits that would be embarrassing on a regular day.  You can also turn to ivillage.com for some great ideas on DIY costumes.

Cut it Out- If you are looking for additional savings during the holiday season, it’s time to cut out the excess. Good Morning America has an article on great ways to cut back on your spending to help your holiday budget. For example, cut back on the amount of grocery shopping and start clipping coupons. You can also cut back on some of your bills for extra savings.

You can enjoy the holiday season, and be festive on a budget.

How Healthy is Your Fast Food Breakfast?

October 14th, 2010

Fixing a Full Breakfast at the Apartment isn't always Possible, but Pay Attention to what you do Eat on the Go

Does your daily routine include a stop in the morning for breakfast at a fast food restaurant? For myself, I try to make breakfast at home, but there are those days when I haven’t done the grocery shopping and it leaves me with no choice but to get breakfast on the go. For others grabbing a quick to-go breakfast is apart of their daily routine.

You may think that eating at fast food restaurants everyday is horrible, but the problem with eating out has never been the mere action of doing so, it’s the choices that some of us choose on the menu.

We can all combat the ” eating an unhealthy breakfast” war by making ourselves aware of what the better choices are on the menu. WebMD has the perfect slideshow that shows the actual nutritional content of some poor choices from  breakfast at restaurants. It also displays better options that will help keep the pounds off and will definitely be better for your overall health.

Who’s the Next Dancer Leaving?

October 12th, 2010

Who will Join The Hoff as the next Star voted of DWTS

The Hoff, Margaret Cho, and Michael Bolton. What do they all have in common? Well, they are all the latest to walk the plank on Dancing with the Stars. After 3 weeks of performances, the stars are really starting to show their true potential.

This season’s competition is pretty tough because you have Jennifer Grey who is dancing on a professional level, but then you have a lot of in-between celebrity performers that are doing well for their level of training. It’s really hard to predict who will be voted off next. After seeing the performances, what do you think? Who will be the next star to say goodbye to the show?

Pumpkin Picking near Palm Valley

October 11th, 2010

Pumpkin Picking in San Jose

As a little one, I remember going pumpkin picking with my family and friends every year. Between picking pumpkins and apples during the fall harvest our family would have tons of pie, which happens to be a favorite of mine.

If you are anything like me and enjoy the smell a great tasting pie, carving pumpkins and most of all, building memories, then take a visit to ABC Farms-Pick of the Pumpkins.

There are a couple of locations throughout the bay area including several in San Jose near Palm Valley. Bring the whole family out for the festivities. Adults can bring their own coffee or purchase a snack there, while sitting out and enjoying the fresh air. Kids will have loads of fun in the inflatable bounces, and everyone can stroll through the patch to find a pumpkin suitable for their carving or baking needs.

Don’t miss out on a great pumpkin picking experience. Check out the ABC Farms website for discount information, locations, and special programs.

What Carbohydrates are Good for You?

October 7th, 2010

Whole Grains help you Control your weight

How important is it to make the switch from white bread to whole grain bread.  From white rice to brown rice? If you are like me then hearing the truth may be hard to understand because when you look at the nutrition facts they look similar. The truth of the matter is that refined carbohydrates which include white bread, rice, and pasta should not be consumed in large amounts.

White carbs fit more in the category of the occasional splurge. Whole grains are better for you. They are a good source of fiber which is what you need. According to WebMD, diets low in fiber increase the chances of cardiovascular disease. Here is what a whole grain can do for you:

Digest Easier: Whole Grains break down differently in your body. White carbs break down into sugar where as whole grains are packed with fiber and help expel waste from your body.

Help Control Weight: Eating whole grain helps you control your weight. If just being healthy isn’t enough reason to make the switch, weight control should do the trick.
